    Communications Syllabus

    Developing spoken English, public speaking and communication skills that are valued in every area of life.

    LAMDA graded examinations under the Communications Syllabus are designed to develop the necessary skills for effective oral communication of the written word, to enable learners the confidence and skills to recite for performance and deliver for public presentations.

    The examinations on offer are: Public Speaking, Verse & Prose and Reading for Performance.

    All of the examinations within this syllabus are excellent for those wishing to improve oracy skills, master interview technique, develop confidence or prepare for University or work based presentations.

    Public Speaking

    Designed to develop the learners skills for effective oral communication and public presentation. The learner will be required to select, structure and shape subject matter into a concise speech, knowing their intended audience and purpose. Understanding and demonstrating vocal skills, body language and engaging an audience will be explored throughout.

    Public Speaking exams are designed to help students become confident, articulate communicators. Through preparing and delivering speeches, learners develop:

    • Clarity of expression and strong vocal technique
    • Confidence in presenting ideas to an audience
    • Critical thinking and persuasive communication skills
    • The ability to structure and deliver engaging speeches

    These skills are invaluable for academic success, interviews, and future careers. Students learn not just what to say, but how to say it with impact!

    * Public Speaking classes are also available for learners of all ages who may be looking to develop confidence & techniques for work purposes, promotions, job interviews or simply for personal development reasons and may not wish to take an examination. *

    Verse & Prose

    Verse & Prose

    Verse & Prose exams introduce students to the power of language through poetry and literature. By exploring a range of texts, students learn how to bring words to life using their voice and imagination.

    Through this work, students develop:

    • Expressive reading skills – using tone, pace, and pause effectively
    • Understanding of language – exploring meaning, imagery, and emotion
    • Confidence in performance – sharing work clearly with an audience
    • Vocal technique – clarity, projection, improved diction, articulation and modulation

    Students perform both poetry and prose, helping them experience different styles of writing while building strong communication and interpretative skills.

    Designed to enable learners to develop a wide range of skills in verse & poetry speaking. There are lots of opportunities to explore vocal presentation and a physical response to the text. Performing chosen selections from memory and demonstrating an understanding of the material, whilst engaging an audience. Sight reading skills are learnt within the higher grades.

    Reading For Performance

    Reading for Performance exams focus on the skill of engaging an audience while reading directly from a text. This is particularly valuable for developing confidence in both academic and real-life situations.

    Students learn to:

    • Read aloud with confidence and clarity
    • Engage an audience without memorisation
    • Interpret text in the moment
    • Use vocal variety to maintain interest and meaning

    Designed to ensure learners develop a range of skills in reading aloud to an audience. Learners will perform recitals and readings, linked to themes. Presentations, reading with fluency, audience awareness and vocal modulation are just some of the skills covered within these examinations.

    These exams are ideal for students who may be less confident with memorisation, while still developing strong performance and communication skills.

    Professional Actor

    Jules Martin is a professional working actor and qualified teacher of Drama & LAMDA. Jules gained her Equity Card soon after her training at The Birmingham School of Speech & Drama.

    She gained a PGCE in Drama Teaching with QTS at Middlesex University in 1998 and continues to combine her freelance teaching & Industry work.
