About the Performance Syllabus
LAMDA performance exams use drama to develop self confidence, physical presence and a strong, clear voice. Qualifications can be gained in Solo Acting, Devising and Mime.
From Entry Level to Grade 8 these are Ofqual recognised qualifications developing confidence through craft. The pathway develops the full range of performance skills in a structured, progressive framework.
Students work with a rich and varied repertoire of texts — from Shakespeare and Chekhov to contemporary drama — developing skills in characterisation, vocal technique, physical performance and dramatic interpretation.
As a professionally trained actor and graduate of the Birmingham School of Speech & Drama, Jules brings real industry experience to her performance teaching — offering insights that go beyond the textbook.

Solo Acting Exams
Designed to develop the necessary skills to communicate a dramatic text to an audience.
Learners will ultimately gain a qualification in Solo Acting but their journey will take them through an extensive & thorough learning process; akin to drama school training. Developing understanding of : Interpretation (style, form, character, plot), Technical skills (characterisation, vocal techniques, physicality, breath control) and Knowledge (stage craft, objectives, sub text, analysis, research, theatre practitioners).
LAMDA Solo Acting qualifications are a fantastic stepping stone to Drama School or University, giving learners an added advantage when it comes to casting approaches like self taping.

Devising Drama
Designed to develop the necessary skills to devise a dramatic performance and present to an audience.
Acting skills are an integral part of these exams but move away from published scripts, allowing the learner the freedom to create and devise their own material working from a given stimulus.
Developing voice production, movement and characterisation; learners can devise their own character and situation whilst creating a sense of reality.
This may suit those who find line learning/reading challenging or those with a flair for creativity & imaginative devising.

Mime
Designed so that learners will develop the technical skills necessary to create and perform mime; with a defined and secure structure.
Skills of gesture, facial expression, body language and use of space will enable the learner to create, develop and perform their own mimed scenes and demonstrate understanding of the content and characterisation.

Supporting School Drama Qualifications
LAMDA exams work alongside school-based qualifications such as GCSEs, A Levels, and BTECs, helping students build confidence and strengthen their performance skills.
While school courses like GCSE Drama and A Level Drama and Theatre often focus on group work, written coursework, and theory, LAMDA provides:
- Individual focus – students develop their own performance skills in a one-to-one setting
- Practical exam experience – regular opportunities to perform and be assessed
- Confidence building – especially helpful for students who want to feel more secure performing in class
- Skill reinforcement – voice, interpretation, and character work that directly supports school assessments
For students taking vocational courses such as BTEC Performing Arts, LAMDA also enhances practical performance skills and helps develop independence and discipline.
In short, LAMDA complements school studies by giving students extra time, focus, and personalised coaching—helping them feel more confident and prepared in both exams and performances.
